Road Work Ahead! A Collaborative Approach to Mapping Boise’s Traffic Disruptions

The City of Boise is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Growth means more construction and community events. Along with routine road and municipal utilities maintenance, new development construction can block off sidewalks or cause lane restrictions for weeks or months. More events get planned throughout the year that can cause multi-street closures or shut down entire blocks for hours or days. Currently, information about street restrictions and closures is found via multiple resources that can be time consuming to gather. This presentation will run through the efforts it took to create an interactive mapping application, called BECCA (Boise Event and Construction Closure Application), that pulls in information from several City departments and external agencies that is used by City staff for short and long-term traffic mitigation planning. The goal of BECCA is to enhance safety in the community, increase situational awareness, minimize impacts to business and property owners, and maximize traffic flow for all modes of transportation in the City’s core during events and construction projects. BECCA provides at-a-glance information to help City staff make informed decisions around, and mitigate the impact of, street restrictions and closures. The application was created using ArcGIS Web Appbuilder and includes several widgets customized to help users query for specific information. We will discuss wins, loses, hurdles, and lessons learned along the way.
